First Time Coming to Staten Island, New York – Did You Know?
YESTERDAY
Like most of North America, the retreat of the ice sheet saw human habitation appearing fairly rapidly on the island. Archaeologists have uncovered tool evidence of Clovis culture activity from around 14,000 years ago. This evidence was first discovered in the Charleston portion of the island in 1917. The Mobil Oil corporation owns property where the Clovis artifacts were discovered. Evidence of American Indian settlements and agriculture were found and approximate activity about 5,000 years ago.
The island is crossed with many foot trails, one follows the south side of the ridge near the routes of present day Richmond Road and Amboy Road. The Lenape Indian group there moved seasonally, employing a slash and burn type of agriculture. Shellfish was a staple part of their diet, which included the Eastern oyster found in the waterways all over the present day New York City region. It was not unusual to uncover evidence of oyster shells larger than twelve inches.
Burial Ridge is a Lenape burial ground found on a bluff overlooking Raritan Bay on Staten Island. It is the biggest pre-European burial ground in New York City.
TODAY
Staten Island is of the five boroughs of New York City, found in the southwest part of the city, separated from New Jersey by the Arthur Kill and the Kill Van Kull, and from the rest of New York by New York Bay. Third-largest in area, Staten Island is the least populated of the boroughs with a count of about 468,730, and is sometimes called “the forgotten borough” by inhabitants feeling neglected by the city government.
The North Shore has the neighborhoods of St. George, Tompkinsville, Clifton, and Stapleton and is probably the most urban part of the island. There you find the officially designated St. George Historic District and the St. Paul’s Avenue-Stapleton Heights Historic District, featuring large Victorian houses. The 2.5-mile F.D.R. Boardwalk, the fourth-longest in the world, is on the Eastern Shore. Thee South Shore is mostly suburban in character, and the West Shore is the most industrial part of the island.
Staten Island once claimed the largest landfill in the world. Closed in 2001, it was temporarily reopened to receive the debris from the September 11th attacks, and is now being turned into what will be New York City’s second largest public park.
PRIME LOCATION
The United States Census Bureau says the borough-county has a total area of 102.5 square miles. The region is vulnerable to sea-level rise, experiencing severe damage and loss of life during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. In addition to the main island, the borough also includes several small uninhabited islands, The Isle of Meadows, Prall’s Island, Shooters Island, Swinburne Island, and Hoffman Island.
The highest point on the island is the summit of Todt Hill, elevation 410 feet, and also the highest point in the five boroughs, in addition to being the highest point on the Atlantic Coastal Plain south of Great Blue Hill in Massachusetts and of the coast south of Maine’s Camden Hills.
QUALITY OF LIFE
Staten Island is home to a diverse population of wildlife, including white tailed deer, hundreds of species of birds such as turkey, hawks, egrets and ring-necked pheasants. Horseshoe crabs, cotton tailed rabbits, opossums, red-eared slider turtles, garter snakes, newts, spring peeper frogs, leapord frogs, fox, box turtles, northern snapping turtles and common snapping turtles are also found in abundance on Staten Island.
The island is also home to the Staten Island Zoo, who recently refurbished a reptile exhibit and will be designing a new carousel and leopard enclosure soon. The Zoo began in 1933 on an educational mandate.
